House Votes to Extend Sales Tax Exemption to American Legion

OKLAHOMA CITY – State Rep. Mike Sanders today praised the unanimous passage of his legislation to add the American Legion to a list of organizations that receive a sales tax exemption in Oklahoma.

“I have been fighting for this sales tax exemption for several years and was excited to see it approved by the House,” said Sanders, R-Kingfisher. “I consider it to be the very least we can do for an organization of our veterans. They have done so much and have given so much and many have made the ultimate sacrifice. It seems only fitting that we give the American Legion the same tax exempt status as other large organizations.”

House Bill 3085 would exempt sales of tangible personal property or services to the American Legion, whether the purchase is made by the entity chartered by the United States Congress or is an entity organized under the laws of this or another state pursuant to the authority of the national American Legion organization.

“The American Legion is the largest auxiliary in Oklahoma. It is a cornerstone organization in our community and it is important to recognize their work and not get in the way of it,” Sanders said.

The legislation was approved by a vote of 94-0 and now proceeds to the Oklahoma Senate.
