Patriotic Thanks

By State Rep. Mike Sanders

The Fourth of July is a day of celebration and thanks. On this important day, we celebrate our American heritage and our freedoms. The Fourth of July also serves as an opportunity to thank the men and women who defend those freedoms we hold so dear.

George Washington, a military leader before he became president, was a prime example of the caliber of men and women who serve our country in the armed forces. Just as today’s active-duty military men and women endure harsh desert conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan, the nation’s first armies endured cold winters and food shortages. These brave men and women also sacrifice time with their families while risking their lives to protect Americans and deter dangerous dictators and groups seeking to prey upon the weak and the oppressed.

On this Fourth of July, I would ask that we all take time to ponder the freedoms that we have and give thanks to those who have contributed to or who continue to contribute to our security and liberty today. We are a nation of free thinkers and courageous lovers of freedom and are so privileged to be able to enjoy the protection of a robust military force. For that we should all celebrate.

We should also celebrate the sure judgment our Founding Fathers, men who were devoted to forming a better nation with never-seen-before ideals of freedom for its citizens from the tyranny of an overreaching government. Our nation has had many trials, from its first battles for independence, to its endurance through World War I and World War II to our current struggles against global terrorism. I for one am extremely proud of our resolve in the face of adversity.

Take care and have a safe Fourth of July weekend.

During the interim I will be traveling the district, but will regularly check the calls I receive at the Capitol office at (405) 557-7407.
